Carlos Mendes de Sousa é professor de literatura brasileira na Universidade do Minho.
É autor de um livro de referência sobre Eugénio de Andrade (1992) e organizou, com Eunice Ribeiro, uma Antologia da Poesia Experimental Portuguesa (2005).
Publicou ensaios fundamentais sobre Cesário Verde, Jorge de Sousa Braga, Luís Miguel Nava ou Eduardo Lourenço, muitos deles publicados na revista Relâmpago, de que é um dos directores.
Na literatura brasileira dedicou-se por longo tempo a Clarice Lispector, Clarice Lispector. Figuras da Escrita (2000), obra com a qual conquistou o Grande Prémio de Ensaio da APE.
