Carlo Michelstaedter

Nasceu em Gorizia, em 1887, numa família judaica. Após concluir o ensino secundário, Michelstaedter matriculou-se na Faculdade de Matemática de Viena. Mudou-se então para Florença, onde pensava dedicar-se à pintura. Em vez disso, frequentou a Faculdade de Letras, dedicando-se sobretudo à poesia e à filosofia gregas. Em 1909, regressou a Gorizia para escrever a sua tese de licenciatura. Na noite de 16 de outubro de 1910, terminou de escrever os Apêndices críticos da Persuasão. No dia seguinte, suicidou-se com um tiro de revólver.
Após a sua morte tornou-se uma lenda da literatura italiana, atraindo a atenção de intelectuais e escritores como Giovanni Papini, Julius Evola, Claudio Magris ou Roberto Calasso.
