Cardeal Marc Ouellet

He was born on June 8, 1944, in Lamotte, Canada. He was ordained a priest of the diocese of Amos on May 25, 1968. He studied in Rome, where, in 1974, he obtained a licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. In 1983, he obtained a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University with the thesis "Existence as Mission: The Theological Anthropology of Hans Urs von Balthasar." Between 1970 and 1989, he lived in Colombia, where he taught for a decade in various seminaries with the Fathers of Saint Sulpice. Subsequently, between 1996 and 2002, he held the chair of Sacramental Theology at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. Elected Titular Bishop of Agropoli and Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in 2001, on March 19 of the same year, he received episcopal ordination from John Paul II, who, in 2002, appointed him Metropolitan Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada; in 2003, he was named a cardinal. In 2010, he was appointed Prefect of the then Congregation for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America by Benedict XVI, and confirmed in both positions by Pope Francis.
