Menezes Ferreira nasceu em Lisboa em 1889. Foi um militar com um conhecimento efectivo e prático do envolvimento de Portugal na Grande Guerra: não só integrou a primeira força expedicionária enviada para Angola e participou na batalha de Naulila, como acompanhou desde a primeira hora a constituição do Corpo Expedicionário Português e a sua progressiva integração na frente, participando na reorganização das forças portuguesas que se verificou após La Lys. Além disso, aderiu à República, tendo sido ajudante de Brito Camacho, líder do Partido Unionista, e envolveu-se numa conspiração militar contra o regime instituído a 28 de Maio.
