Camille Saint-Saëns
Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist, born on October 9, 1835 in Paris and died on December 16, 1921 in Algiers, Algeria. Saint-Saëns is widely recognized as one of the greatest French composers of the nineteenth century, known for his versatility, refined compositional technique, and the wide range of works he produced throughout his long career.
Saint-Saëns began his musical training at an early age, showing extraordinary talent as a pianist as a child. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he quickly excelled, becoming a virtuoso of the piano and organ. At the age of 23, he became titular organist of the Madeleine Church in Paris, a position of great prestige that he held for two decades.
His work covers virtually all musical genres, from chamber music, symphonies, concertos and operas, to choral and religious music. Among his best-known compositions are the "Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78" (known as the "Organ Symphony"), the "Piano Concerto No. 2", and the suite The Carnival of the Animals (1886), which, despite being composed as a light and humorous work, became one of his most popular works. "The Swan", a piece in this suite, is particularly famous and often performed independently.
Saint-Saëns also wrote several operas, the best known being Samson et Dalila (1877), which remains one of the main works of the international operatic repertoire. In addition, he was one of the first composers to create music specifically for films, writing the soundtrack for the film L'Assassinat du duc de Guise (1908).
Saint-Saëns' work is characterized by formal clarity and a blend of tradition and innovation. Although he was a proponent of classical musical forms, he was also open to new ideas and was a great admirer of Wagner, whose influence is visible in some of his works.
Throughout his life, Saint-Saëns was an important figure in French and European musical life. In addition to his achievements as a composer, he was also known for his role as an advocate of French music and for his critical writing, both on music and other cultural topics. His legacy continues to be celebrated, with many of his works still popular in concert repertoires and recordings around the world.
