Bruno Bettelheim nasceu em 1903, em Viena. Passou um ano nos campos de concentração nazis de Dachau e Buchenwald (1938-39) e, depois de libertado, emigrou para os Estados Unidos, onde se distinguiu como psicólogo e professor universitário, nomeadamente na Universidade de Chicago e no Rockford College. Ficou mundialmente conhecido pelos seus contributos para a investigação sobre o autismo infantil e pelo Psicanálise dos Contos de Fadas, um dos seus trabalhos mais famosos. Morreu em 1990.
