Bernardo Carvalho nasceu em 1960, no Rio de Janeiro. É um dos mais relevantes escritores de língua portuguesa das últimas décadas. Estreou-se em 1993, com o volume de contos Aberração, e, entre 1995 e 2023, publicou os romances Onze, Os bêbados e os sonâmbulos, Teatro, As iniciais, Medo de Sade, Nove noites (Prémio Oceanos), Mongólia (Prémio Jabuti e Prémio da Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte), O sol se põe em São Paulo, O filho da mãe, Reprodução (Prémio Jabuti), Simpatia pelo demônio, O último gozo do mundo e Os substitutos. Os seus livros estão publicados em cerca de quinze países.
