Ayaan Hirsi Ali nasceu em 1969 em Mogadíscio, na Somália. Formou-se em Ciências Políticas na Universidade de Leiden e foi deputada da Câmara Baixa do Parlamento holandês pelo Partido Liberal. Escreveu o argumento para o filme Submission do realizador holandês Theo van Gogh, que veio a ser assassinado por um muçulmano fanático. Considerada pela Times uma das 100 pessoas mais influentes do planeta em 2005, Ali foi agraciada com inúmeros prémios no domínio dos direitos humanos.
