Axel Munthe

Axel Munthe nasceu na Suécia a 31 de outubro de 1857. Estudou Medicina nas universidades de Uppsala, Montpellier e Paris e exerceu em Paris e Roma, antes de se tornar médico da família real sueca. Em 1929 publicou O Livro de San Michele, texto autobiográfico que se transformou num bestseller mundial. Também apelidado de São Francisco de Assis moderno, pela sua filantropia e devoção ao cuidado animal, Axel Munthe faleceu a 11 de fevereiro de 1949, em Estocolmo. A Villa San Michele é hoje uma fundação dedicada à cultura e à proteção da natureza.
