António Reis nasceu em 1927, em Vila Nova de Gaia. Distinguiu-se sobretudo como cineasta e poeta. Foi membro activo do Cineclube do Porto e um dos cultores do chamado Novo Cinema. As suas principais longas-metragens (co-realizadas com Margarida Cordeiro, sua mulher) são Trás-os-Montes (1976) e Ana (1982); co-realizou, com Manoel de Oliveira, O Acto da Primavera (1962). A curta-metragem Jaime (1974) foi premiada no Festival de Cinema de Locarno e o filme Rosa de Areia (1989) estreou no Festival de Berlim. Enquanto poeta, a obra é breve mas fulgurante: dois livros publicados em edição de autor, na década de 1950, posteriormente reunidos no volume Poemas Quotidianos, publicado em 1967 na Portugália, esgotado há décadas e só agora reeditado. António Reis morreu em Lisboa, em 1991.
