Antonio Pigafetta foi um nobre italiano do Renascimento que exerceu funções de cronista, explorador e geógrafo ao serviço da República de Veneza. Além disso, foi cavaleiro da Ordem de Malta, e considera-se que terá sido o primeiro europeu a relatar a descoberta do estreito de Magalhães. Em 1518 foi viver para Espanha. Fez parte da expedição capitaneada por Fernão de Magalhães, que culminou na primeira circum-navegação do globo. Daí nasceu A Primeira Viagem em Redor do Mundo, que se converteu principal fonte de informação sobre a viagem de Magalhães e Sebastián Elcano, e sobre a própria vida de Pigafetta.
