António Gentil Martins nasceu em Lisboa em 1930. Licenciou-se em Medicina e Cirurgia pela Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa e foi bolseiro no Reino Unido nos primeiros anos de profissão, onde se especializou em cirurgia pediátrica. Dividiu a carreira entre o Instituto Português de Oncologia, criado pelo seu avô materno Francisco Gentil, e o Hospital D. Estefânia.
