António Escohotado, nascido em Madrid em 1941, foi professor de direito, filosofia e sociologia na Universidade de Madrid. A sua vasta cultura enciclopédica associada a um elevado domínio de recursos expressivos transparece no seu trabalho como tradutor de Hobbes, Newton e Jefferson e nas suas obras, entre as quais estão Sesenta semanas en el trópico (2003) e Caos y orden (Premio Espasa de Ensayo, 2000), De physis a polis, Majestades, crímenes y víctimas, El espiritu de la comedia (Premio Anagrama de Ensayo), e História Geral das Drogas (já editada em Portugal).
