Doutorada em Literatura Portuguesa Moderna e Contemporânea e Agregada em Literatura. Professora na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Diretora do CLEPUL (Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias), Presidente da APT (Associação Portuguesa de Tradutores) e Administradora do OLP (Observatório da Língua Portuguesa). É, ainda, membro de outras instituições científicas e culturais nacionais e estrangeiras. Autora de diversos livros, nomeadamente: Eça de Queirós Cronista. Do Distrito de Évora (1867) às Farpas (1871-72) (1998), Labirinto Sensível (2003), No Fundo dos Espelhos (2003-07), Breves & Longas no País das Maravilhas (2004), Emergências Estéticas (2006), Itinerário (2009). Coordenou, também, dentre outras obras: Teolinda Gersão: Retratos Provisórios (2006), De tempos a tempos. Júlio Conrado (2008), Homem de Palavra. Padre Sena Freitas (2008), Rui Nunes. Antologia Crítica e Pessoal (2009).
