Natural do Massachusetts, onde ainda hoje reside, Anita Shreve formou-se na Tufts University, foi professora e acabou por enveredar pelo jornalismo após uma das suas histórias ter ganho o O. Henry Prize, em 1975, escrevendo então artigos para revistas como a Quest, Us e Newsweek. Mais tarde, publicou dois livros de não ficção a partir de artigos publicados na The New York Times Magazine. Em 1989 abandonou o jornalismo e dedicou-se apenas à literatura, alcançando um grande sucesso internacional - as suas obras venderam já mais de 7 milhões de exemplares em todo o mundo. Em 1998, recebeu o PEN/L.L. Winship Award e o The New England Book Award para ficção.
No catálogo da Porto Editora figuram os romances Testemunho (2010) e A Ilha dos Desencontros (2011).
