André Malraux nasceu em Paris a 3 de novembro de 1901. Figura central da cultura francesa do século XX, participou ativamente nas lutas revolucionárias do seu tempo e sobre elas produziu algumas das mais marcantes obras da literatura mundial, entre elas A Condição Humana (1933), centrado na revolução comunista chinesa, e A Esperança (1937), onde reflete a sua participação na Guerra Civil de Espanha. Membro da Resistência francesa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, dedicou-se à vida política no pós-guerra, tendo desempenhado o cargo de ministro da Cultura nos governos de Charles de Gaulle, entre 1959 e 1969. Morreu em Créteil a 23 de novembro de 1976.
