An Yu nasceu em Pequim, onde passou a adolescência, antes de sair para estudar e trabalhar em Londres, Nova Iorque e Paris (obteve o seu Master of Fine Arts na Universidade de Nova Iorque), Publicou dois livros de ficção – que escreve originalmente em inglês –, os romances Porco Assado (2020) e Ghost Music (2022). Escreve para diversos jornais e revistas, como The Sunday Times, Freemann’s, Literary Hub, The Wall Street Journal ou Los Angeles Review, entre outros. Atualmente vive em Hong Kong.
