Amorim de Carvalho

Amorim de Carvalho (1904-1976), poet, aesthete, and philosopher, is the greatest Portuguese critical figure. Meticulous in his analysis, his intelligence is equally adept at broad syntheses.
In his theory of aesthetics, he persistently drew attention to the values of reality and intelligibility, to a firm appreciation of what he called aesthetic nomia. His work, therefore, resulted in vigorous opposition to so-called "modernism." Nowhere else in this field of knowledge has there been a theorization as systematic and scientifically and philosophically grounded as his.
