Almerindo Janela Afonso é sociólogo, doutor em Educação e Professor da UM. Integra vários órgãos universitários, associações científicas e conselhos editoriais. Foi professor visitante no Brasil, Espanha, cabo verde e Visiting Academic no IE da Universidade de londres. Recebeu o Prémio Rui Grácio da SPCE/Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Foi membro do Conselho Científico para a Avaliação de Professores, Presidente da Sociedade Portuguesa de ciências da Educação e conselheiro do CNE.
