Alfredo Bryce Echenique nasceu em Lima, Peru, em 1939. Fez os seus estudos primários e secundários em colégios regidos por professores americanos e ingleses. Obteve os títulos de Advogado e de Doutor em letras na Universidade Nacional de San Marcos. Em 1964 mudou-se para a Europa, onde viveu muito tempo em França e Espanha. É autor de uma vasta obra, da qual a Teorema publicou já Guia Triste de Paris (1999) e A Vida Exagerada de Martin Romaña (2005).
