Albert Cossery nasceu no Cairo em 1913 e viveu em Paris desde 1945, no mesmo modesto quarto de hotel, no bairro de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, onde veio a morrer em 2008. Escritor egípcio de língua francesa, amigo de Albert Camus, Lawrence Durrell e Henry Miller, estreou-se na ficção em 1940 com Os Homens Esquecidos de Deus. Depois disso editou apenas oito títulos — porque o autor, adepto da indolência, sempre fez questão de não ultrapassar as suas médias: uma linha por semana, um livro de oito em oito anos. Contemplado em 1990 com o Grande Prémio da Francofonia, atribuído pela Academia Francesa ao conjunto da sua obra, e em 2000 com o Prémio Mediterrâneo pelo seu último romance, As Cores da Infâmia, Albert Cossery tem vindo a ser descoberto geração após geração, e os seus livros estão traduzidos em inglês, alemão, árabe, checo, castelhano e português.
