Albert Cohen (1895-1981) nasceu na ilha grega de Corfu, filho único de uma família judia. Em 1914, mudou-se para Genebra, onde fez o curso de Direito. Inicialmente alto funcionário da Sociedade das Nações e depois da Organização das Nações Unidas, Albert Cohen publicou uma peça de teatro e vários livros de memórias, mas deve a sua celebridade ao romance Bela do Senhor, galardoado, em 1968, com o Grande Prémio de Romance da Academia Francesa.
