Alaa Al-Aswani nasceu em 1957. Foi dentista no Egito e nos EUA, tendo estudado e investigado durante 17 anos esta especialidade. É um romancista premiado e traduzido em vinte cinco idiomas. É também ensaísta, contribuindo regularmente para todo o género de publicações com artigos sobre literatura, política e sociedade. Aswani é considerado um dos 500 muçulmanos mais influentes do mundo.
