Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee estudou nas universidades de Calcutá , Jawaharlal Nehru e Harvard e é professor de Economia da Ford Foundation no Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Foi presidente do Bureau for Research in the Economic Analysis of Development, e é membro da American Academy of arts and Sciences, da Econometric Society e das fundações Guggenheim e Alfred P. Sloan. Recebeu muitos prémios, entre os quais o primeiros Infosys Prize, em 2009.
