ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Algernon Blackwood

Blackwood was one of the most prolific writers of "ghost stories" ever. Praised by critics as the most consistent and mysterious writer of the genre, his stories were considered the best "strange" tales of his century and any other. He was born near London and educated at Wellington College.
He was the son of a postmaster and had a very varied career: from farmer in Canada, to hotel clerk, to newspaper reporter in New York, to bartender, model, journalist for the New York Times, private secretary, businessman and violin teacher. He was an essayist for several periodicals and in the 1930s he returned to England where he began writing supernatural stories. He was very successful and wrote at least 10 collections of short stories appearing on radio and television to tell them. He also wrote 14 works, some children's books and a number of plays. A lover of nature and the outdoors, he doesn't hide it in his stories. Jack Sullivan notes that Blackwood's life is more a reflection of his work than any other short story writer or ghost story writer. Like his protagonists, he was mysterious and adventurous, when he delved into occultism, Rosicrucianism and Buddhism, he was likely skiing or mountaineering. He was a member of some orders and a contemporary of Arthur Machen (published by Sde in 2007 and 2009).
It is not known for certain (not even he knew) how many stories he had written. His works seek less to frighten than to provoke discomfort.
