Estimating Groundwater Storage In Weathered Crystalline Rock Aquifers Of Aroca Catchment, Northern Uganda Using Geophysical Methods And Aquifer Tests

Groundwater derived from within the medium grained weathered clasts to the base of the unconsolidated regolith in addition to fissures in the underlying saprocks is widely used to supply water to most upcoming towns. However, in addition to limited reliable data, little is known of the geometry and storage capacity of these aquifers. This study used magnetic resonance sounding (MRS) and complimentary electrical resistivity (VES), lithological logs and hydraulic tests to determine aquifer geometry and hydraulic properties of Aroca catchment. The main aquifer is largely a medium-grained sandy saprolite and exhibits leaky aquifer characteristics. It is supplemented by the saprolite-fissured boundary and the bulk of the fissured secondary aquifers. MRS and VES were useful in delineating the upper surface (up to a mean depth ~5 mbgl) of the aquifer geometry. The mean depth to the bottom of the saprolite and fractured layers was 33 and 70 mbgl respectively. The mean static water level across the catchment ranges from ~1.4 to 30 mbgl (with a median value of 13.7 mbgl). The mean T is 4.3 to 104 m2d-1, K is 7.0 md-1 and Sy is ~0.016 for this aquifer. MRS determined drainable groundwater storage of aquifers with a mean value of 380 mm, which is much lower than the value of 590 mm from similar geological formations of Benin. MRS water content and decay constant of the saturated aquifer had mean values of 6.4% and 156ms, respectively. Just like most geophysical methods, MRS suffers from resolution loss with depth and result into the fissured zone not being well resolved. MRS complemented by VES and aquifer tests has provided a new insight in aquifer geometry characterization and groundwater storage in the deeply weathered crystalline rock aquifers of Aroca catchment and the region. The geometry and hydraulic properties of these weathered crystalline rock aquifers can further be constrained for better spatial representation by conducting a number of well distributed long duration aquifer tests and MRS measurements across the catchment and region. Hence, more site investigations is recommended to improve on the knowledge of storage capacities of the catchment/region aquifers for better future groundwater abstraction strategies, resource planning and management.

The initial conditions of a forecast are provided by data assimilation systems, combining the latest short-range forecast with a selection of atmospheric observations. One of the current major limitations is the lack of global wind profile observations, particularly in regions and for spatial scales where geostrophic mass-wind coupling is weak. The European Space Agency's (ESA) Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) satellite mission Aeolus provides a novel data set of wind profiles with quasi-global coverage intended to fill these data gaps in the current GOS. Therefore, it is of great interest to assess the impact of the Aeolus observations in NWP to demonstrate the potential value of such satellite-based DWL missions. A crucial prerequisite for using meteorological observations in NWP data assimilation systems is a comprehensive knowledge of their errors. The first part of this thesis investigates the Aeolus data quality through comparisons with three independent reference data sets: collocated radiosonde observations and model equivalents of the global ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON) model of Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) and the Integrated Forecast System (IFS) model of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF). This enables a comprehensive estimation and characterization of the systematic and random errors of the Aeolus wind profile observations. Approaches to correct for the analyzed complex systematic errors that can be used in the context of quality control in data assimilation systems are being tested. Furthermore, to obtain a meaningful estimation of the Aeolus instrumental error, the representativeness errors for the comparisons are determined based on high-resolution regional model simulations. The results show the importance of accounting for representativeness errors for the mission s calibration and validation activities and provide an estimate of the vertical structure of the Aeolus Rayleigh and Mie wind instrumental error that can be used for the assigned observation error in data assimilation. The second part of this thesis examines how numerical weather forecasting benefits from the assimilation of the novel DWL observations from the Aeolus satellite.

Different researchers have used different methods to model extreme rainfall around the globe. For example Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) and time series. This project focuses on modelling extreme rainfall in the areas Nyeri, Kericho Mombasa Nairobi and Kakamega. There are areas which are more prone to heavy rains, using rainfall data for the past 20 years to model extreme rainfall pattern in Kenya. We have used generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) to model extreme rainfall and have used time series to show the pattern and forecast the occurrence of extreme rainfall in Kenya. From forecasted result, we found that for the year 2016-2018 monthly rainfall tend to increase and decrease randomly this could be as a result of changes in climate due to global warming.

The research investigated the negative impacts of climate change on rural communities in the Vubwi District in the eastern province of Zambia using observation, trend analysis, Pearson Regression, and Multiple Regression. Simple and Purposive sampling was employed to collect samples from the population, of 6096 rural households. The finding of the analysis was that 78% of the respondents were adversely affected y the impacts of climate change, while 22 were not badly affected. The local people lacked access to early warning and facilities such as dams for harvesting rain water for irrigation in times of drought and animal drinking. It was recommended that early maturity seed varieties be introduced to the rural poor people and scaling up means to livelihood diversity such as chicken rearing and adopting drought resistant crops such as cassava.

The study employed Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL). The study examined the impact of climate change on Nigeria s agricultural output. Investigated the existence of longrun relationship between climate change and agricultural outputs in Nigeria, examined the direction of causation between climate change and economic growth in Nigeria. From the findings it was discovered that one year lag value of carbon emission is highly significant, and it is positively related to agricultural output in the short run and long run. It was also discovered that one year lag of rainfall is negatively related to agricultural output and it is insignificant. Furthermore, it was also revealed that one year lag of temperature is positively related to agricultural output, meaning there is a positive relationship between agricultural output and temperature in Nigeria. The study therefore recommended that it is necessary for the government and other relevant authorities to constantly provide information on rainfall distribution ahead of time to help the farmers plan. And also recommended that government should ensure appropriate temperature information most especially there is need that various agricultural output needs to put into consideration.

Within this framework, the study's specific objectives are the following. To determine the green and blue water footprint of sugarcane production. To assess the contribution of the individual climatic parameters to each of green and blue water footprint of sugarcane. To examine the relationship between climatic elements and overall water footprint pattern of Sugarcane. There is an anticipation of a restructuring of the patterns of demand and supply of water for agriculture owing to possible effects of change in climate. Thus, the assessment of the influences of climatic variation on water consumption for agriculture is of import. Water footprint as an indicator provides a different methodology to the assessment of agricultural water consumption under variability of climate. This study offers an analysis of the impact of climate variability on the water footprint of sugarcane in Dangote Sugar Company, Numan during 1981-2013. Climate data was collected for a period of 33 years. Using the CROPWAT model, water footprint for sugarcane was calculated. The outcome was later correlated using the SPSS and SPSS AMOS 21 packages to find the relationship between water footprint of sugarcane and the climatic variation. Also the impact climatic variables had on water footprint of sugarcane was deduced. The results indicated that a) crop evapotranspiration and irrigation water requirements of sugarcane in the study area presented an uptrend and this is due to the variation in climatic factors; b) green water footprint (102 m3/ton) was lower than the blue water footprint (172 m3/ton) and; c) the climatic factors accountable for 17% of the variation in water footprint of sugarcane under the study period. From the results, it was observed that water footprint of sugarcane is influenced most by the rainfall element. However, there are other agricultural management factors that may also have an effect on it, even higher than that of climate. Attention however must be given for adaptation of effective strategies to reduce the agricultural production risk associatedwith climate change in the long run.

Livestock mortalities and morbidity, human morbidity, conflicts, food insecurity, reduction of livestock prices, and increase in food prices were among the socioeconomic impacts of drought experienced. Drought have also a great impact in pastoral society's in terms of decreasing livestock trade and marketing, increasing conflict and insecurity, decrease the education and increase destitution among the societies. Drought is a major cause of poverty in pastoral communities. Pastoralists experience decline in levels of productivity from their herds following losses in livestock capital from deaths, low calving rates, low milk production and weight loss, which consequently reduce the market value of livestock through drought. It is therefore a fact that drought results in destruction and collapse of pastoralists livelihoods, dependence on food aid and long-term destitution. Furthermore, reduction of pastoralists purchasing power is one of the important economic effects of recurrent droughts. To cater for their nutritional and energy needs, pastoral communities purchase cereals and other foods with the proceeds from sales of livestock and livestock products.
