FEEP thruster is one type of ion propulsion system that provides a low thrust of the order of micro-Newton (uN) to milli-Newton (mN) that is primarily used for precise spacecraft attitude control with extremely high efficiency and small impulse bits based on the exhaust velocity of an ejected ion from a thruster. This thesis report includes a mathematical and 3D CAD model of a FEEP thruster with the overarching goal of investigating and analyzing the thruster s parametric performance. To accomplish this, a MATLAB program was used to simulate the change in thrust and exhaust velocity over time using various types of liquid metal as a propellant, assuming the fuel mass is equal to the atomic mass of the propellant, the wet mass of the spacecraft is assumed to be 4kg, and the charge of an ion is assumed to be 1.602 10-19 while the supplied voltage is held constant at 10 kV. Furthermore, because the porous crown emitter is the heart of the FEEP thruster, its stiffness and topology optimization were investigated. The simulation results show that the thrust value of the FEEP thruster over time ranges from 0.213 N to 211mN during stable ion flow rate and mass expulsion of indium propellant, implying that the result is comparable to realistic FEEP parameters. Furthermore, as expected, increasing the voltage between the emitter and extractor electrodes and decreasing the mass expulsion of the propellant increased the thrust value of the FEEP thruster.

The exponential model is often used because of its simple application. However, this distribution has its limitations. To overcome the shortcomings of the exponential model, this thesis examines how Weibull Distribution Theory can be utilized to produce appropriate component reliability estimators with a degree of certainty. The Weibull distribution is a flexible distribution in that it has the ability to approximate other distributions such as "Normal" and "Exponential . Subsequently, appropriate mean life estimators can be determined for various types of life data. The versatility offered by the Weibull Distribution model makes it ideal for selectively supplementing current methods of field reliability monitoring, especially when the onset of component wear out is suspected or the success of a modification is sought. The type of field data encountered when monitoring aircraft reliability dictated that a Weibull model be developed for Type 1, multiply censored data. To determine whether data fitted a Weibull distribution, the Rank Regression method was used to produce median ranks for plotting on Weibull probability paper. To analytically determine Weibull parameter estimators and approximate confidence limits, the Maximum Likelihood method was utilized. Automation of both these methods was achieved using Fortran programming. As the number of failures increase, Weibull parameters stabilize and the degree of certainty provided by Weibull confidence limits improves. This results in the Weibull model being able to produce mean life estimates in a timely manner. With the aid of Weibull shape parameters, field problems may be relatively quickly identified and/or confirmed, allowing for faster corrective action response.

This thesis deals with system geometry effect on target localization process. Modifications are proposed in both the sensors deployment network and the algorithm sequence used. The work will be on a 3 steps: First, working on a small cell network taking minimum number of sensors. Different optimal sensor deployment methods will be examined and a pilot area will be chosen from a Multilateration network at Cairo International Airport, 05L Runway (RW). Simulation for a single aircraft is performed and the results are compared. Second, the deployment method that gives the best results in a small cell network will be considered and a new sensors deployment covering an area larger than the existing one is proposed, trying to have the same performance of the existing system with the advantage of decreasing the number of sensors. Finally, the proposed Multilateration network is divided into 9 main clusters and 4 backup clusters instead of using all sensors in localization process, and the cluster that has the least PDOP (position dilution of precision) is selected. To enhance the localization process only the cluster that has least PDOP < 21 is selected. Otherwise, are rejected. Space capacity and safety of Airspace Surveillance Systems are regularly increasing to meet the demands of air traffic control. A 2-D Multilateration algorithm is proposed to accurately identify the aircraft position. It is based on the classical Two Ray propagation model. Important parameters that affect the final aircraft estimation position are presented like the path gain factor (interference factor). The proposed algorithm uses the geographic coordinates (Latitude and Longitude) which are considered more practically used in navigation than Cartesian coordinates that are used in previous algorithms in literature. In order to simulate the algorithm, the Multilateration network at Cairo international Airport is considered to be a pilot area and the results are presented.

It will also analyse the key technology challenges and the legislative situation. The world s population is growing and people continue to move from rural to urban areas. This is accompanied by an increasing number of cars. As a result of this, traffic jams in densely populated areas and long commutes are becoming omnipresent. Extension possibilities for existing infrastructure, especially within urban areas, are very limited due to space. Consequently, innovative alternatives are required. Flying cars, also known as vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, still appear to be a future vision which seems to be far away. However, to date, more than 200 of such concepts around the world are being developed, some of which are even performing flight tests. The objective of this Master s Thesis therefore is to evaluate if flying cars have a realistic potential to improve the overloaded ground infrastructure systems on a mid-term ten years basis. In order to answer the research question, a conceptual examination and subsequent classification of the existing concepts is conducted. Based on this a profound content analysis of the four most mature aircraft is carried out. As a result, three significant technical challenges emerge: batteries, noise pollution and the autonomous flying capability. By performing another content analysis on these obstacles, their respective relevance and impact following an upcoming vehicle certification is investigated. Furthermore, VTOL aircraft operations would require legislative amendments. Hence, the current legal situations and actual activities in those regions are studied, where the four companies with the most mature concepts are based. On that basis it can be concluded, that flying cars have a huge potential to relieve the overstressed infrastructure systems on the ground. Although more than ten years will be required to significantly improve this situation, the first flying cars will most likely be visible much sooner. Technical as well as legal challenges exist, but are not insurmountable and especially the latter are relatively well developed already to enable VTOL operations in an urban environment in the near future.
