The book proposes a novel approach to the human condition: an anthropological outlook that is centered around the notions of personhood and sociality. Through a rich confrontation with ethnographic and historical material, this work contributes to the ongoing task of overcoming the theoretical constraints that have hindered anthropological thinking over the past century.

SOBRE O AUTOR

João Pina-Cabral

João Pina-Cabral é um antropólogo social com extensa obra etnográfica publicada sobre o Alto Minho, Macau e sobre a Bahia. A sua obra tem abordado principalmente a questão da pessoa e a sua relação com o poder, focando os aspetos da família, da religião e da etnicidade. É Investigador Coordenador do Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa e Professor Catedrático Emérito da Escola de Antropologia e Conservação da Universidade de Kent (Reino Unido). Foi Presidente fundador da Associação Portuguesa de Antropologia e co-fundador e ex-presidente da Associação Europeia de Antropólogos Sociais. Os seus principais livros são Filhos de Adão, Filhas de Eva (D. Quixote 1989), Os Contextos da Antropologia (Difel, 1991), Em Terra de Tufões (Instituto Cultural e Macau 1993), Between China and Europe: Person, Culture and Emotion in Macau (Continuum 2002), O Homem na Família (ICS, 2003), Aromas de Urze e de Lama (ICS, 2008), Gente Livre (Terceiro Nome, com V.A. da Silva, 2012) e World: An Anthropological Examination (2017).
