Lisa Jane Smith, cujas obras são uma combinação do género de terror, ficção científica, fantasia e romance, obteve o reconhecimento do público com a série Crónicas Vampíricas, cujo primeiro volume é Despertar. Publicado nos anos 90 e convertido numa referência da literatura juvenil de terror, retoma o clássico tema da luta entre Luz e Sombra, dos seus adorados C. S. Lewis e J. R. R. Tolkien. Segundo palavras da autora, «queria escrever livros como os deles, onde o Bem enfrenta o Mal e vence. Queria ser Frodo, morto de medo em Mordor, consciente de que o Mal que enfrenta é muito maior e mais poderoso do que ele, e ainda assim é capaz de reunir a coragem necessária para tentar e chegar a ser um herói. Queria transmitir aos jovens que não devem renunciar à esperança.
