The Shield of Achilles, which won the National Book Award in 1956, may well be W. H. Auden’s most important, intricately designed, and unified book of poetry. In addition to its famous title poem, which reimagines Achilles’s shield for the modern age, when war and heroism have changed beyond recognition, the book also includes two sequences—“Bucolics” and “Horae Canonicae”—that Auden believed to be among his most significant work. Featuring an authoritative text and an introduction and notes by Alan Jacobs, this volume brings Auden’s collection back into print for the first time in decades and offers the only critical edition of the work.

As Jacobs writes in the introduction, Auden’s collection “is the boldest and most intellectually assured work of his career, an achievement that has not been sufficiently acknowledged.” Describing the book’s formal qualities and careful structure, Jacobs shows why The Shield of Achilles should be seen as one of Auden’s most central poetic statements—a richly imaginative, beautifully envisioned account of what it means to live, as human beings do, simultaneously in nature and in history.

W. H. Auden

Poeta e escritor, Wystan Hugh Auden nasce na cidade inglesa de York, em 1907. Estuda no Christ’s Church College em Oxford, onde revela a sua precocidade poética e trava amizade com os jovens escritores Stephen Spender e Christopher Isherwood. A juventude de Auden é influenciada por poetas como William Blake, Emily Dickinson e Robert Frost.
O seu primeiro livro de poemas data de 1928 e, dois anos mais tarde, com a publicação de "Poems", W.H. Auden assume-se como porta-voz de uma nova geração de poetas. Auden viaja muito durante a sua juventude, passando pela China, Islândia, Alemanha e Espanha, onde combaterá durante a Guerra Civil. Em 1939 parte para os Estados Unidos e adquire a cidadania norte-americana.
W. H. Auden foi chanceler de "The Academy of American Poets" entre 1954 e 1973, vivendo esse período entre Nova Iorque e a Áustria. Morre em Viena no ano de 1973.
A sua carreira passa por duas fases distintas, sendo a primeira fortemente marcada por ideais socialistas e pela psicanálise freudiana. A segunda corresponde ao período em que o poeta vive nos Estados Unidos, dedicando a sua atenção ao cristianismo e à teologia. Auden deixou uma vasta obra que inclui poesia, drama e ensaios, constituindo uma influência marcante para as gerações seguintes de poetas de língua inglesa.
