It was written then to give machinists practical instruction on how to design and construct patterns; in doing so it describes the actual pattern shop practice of the late 19th century, using the terms and methods of that period. Joshua Rose explains the various types of patterns, how they are constructed, and the tools that are used. This is a reprint of the sixth edition, which gives some indication of the popularity of the book among late 19th century practitioners.
