Catulo

Gaio Valério Catulo (c. 84 a. C.–c. 54 a. C.) foi um dos mais notáveis poetas da Roma republicana. Nascido em Verona, mudou-se jovem para Roma, onde se integrou no círculo dos poetae novi, ou neotéricos, que se inspiravam nos modelos da poesia helenística, nomeadamente em Calímaco e Safo, privilegiando a intensidade lírica, a subtileza formal e a dimensão pessoal da experiência poética, em oposição à poesia épica dominante.
Apesar da brevidade da sua vida — morreu com cerca de trinta anos —, Catulo deixou uma marca duradoura na literatura latina e europeia.
