Pitol applauds Bakhtin’s world building, Gogol’s "carnivalesque [literary] breath," and Dante’s dizzying intensity. The character finds a muse in Marietta Karapetiz, whom he aptly dubs Dante C. de la Estrella, and the two debate the literary greats.
