Noble offers a new interpretation of the development of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology which analyses the central position of language within a philosophy of perception predicated upon the interdependence of seeing and speaking. Beginning with The Structure of Behaviour, and particularly through the work of Goldstein, the study situates the context in which language appears as a dominant theme in Merleau-Ponty's thought within a philosophical debate concerning the living organism which can be traced back to the writings of Kant. The work then re-examines the influences of German phenomenology on Merleau-Ponty, as well as the philosopher's reflections on literature, linguistics, and art, basing its arguments on both published and unpublished texts.
