Seminar paper from the year 1992 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1 (A), University of Freiburg, course: English Literature, language: English, abstract: The subject of this term paper will be the poem "Mamie" by Carl Sandburg. He can be regarded as one of the well-known poets of 20th century American literature. Unfortunately, many people only read his famous poem "Chicago" in which the young Sandburg tells us about the Illinois Capital to show different aspects of the industrial revolution and human labour. When I opened the great book Complete Poems of Carl Sandburg, I found "Mamie"1 and was immediately struck by its energy and sadness. I decided to take a closer look at it and interpret the poem in this term-paper. In the first part I will give some general information about this poem and make a short summary. While analyzing the outer and inner structure of the poem I want to show similarities between its contents and Sandburgs own life. After examining the language I will show that Mamie is a typical American poem and that it contains socialist ideas.
