SOBRE O AUTOR

J. M. Synge

John Millington Synge dramaturgo, poeta e escritor, nasceu a 16 de Abril de 1871 em Rathfarnham, Dublin. Com as suas duas primeiras peças em um acto, Cavalgada para o Mar e A Sombra da Ravina, afirmou-se como uma das figuras centrais da literatura irlandesa. Em 1902, com W. B. Yeats e Lady Gregory, fundou o Abbey Theatre em Dublin, onde foi director e conselheiro literário. Em carta a Stephen MacKenna, Synge escreveu: «Não acredito na possibilidade de um teatro nacional puramente fantasioso, idealista... o drama só pode nascer das realidades fundamentais da vida, e estas nunca são de fantasia.» O realismo estilizado da sua escrita reflectiu-se no tipo de ensino praticado na escola de representação do Abbey Theatre. Synge tinha doença de Hodgkin. Morreu com 37 anos, em Março de 1909, deixando incompleta a sua última peça, Deirdre of the Sorrows.
