John Carlin foi diretor executivo do jornal inglês The Independent on Sunday, para o qual exerceu as funções de correspondente na África do Sul entre 1989 e 1995. É autor do livro Playing the Enemy, sobre o antigo presidente sul-africano Nelson Mandela, o qual serviu de inspiração ao filme Invictus, realizado por Clint Eastwood e protagonizado por Morgan Freeman e Matt Damon.
