It was no surprise that I was ill prepared for my new life on skid row, working as the live-in manager for a run-down, sleazy motel. I went from enjoying my sheltered existence of weekly book club gatherings and G-rated luncheons with church friends to rubbing shoulders with hard-core drug dealers and assisting local police with busting criminals. A cyborg, child molester, giant, and kleptomaniac in the Witness Protection Program were just a few of the interesting boarders I had to oversee, with each person more unpredictable than the next.
