Daniel Defoe

Daniel Foe — o apelido só seria alterado pelo autor em 1695 para Defoe — (1660-1731), é considerado por muitos o primeiro romancista de língua inglesa. Foi comerciante, economista, jornalista e espião antes de escrever o seu primeiro romance, As Aventuras de Robinson Crusoe, aos sessenta anos.
Tendo testemunhado na infância a Peste e o Grande Incêndio de Londres, acabou por se transformar num apaixonado por viagens depois de conhecer profundamente países como a França, Espanha e os Países Baixos. Com uma vida extremamente aventurosa, esteve encarcerado por dívidas e lutou durante um breve período de tempo na rebelião do duque de Monmouth. Poucos anos depois começou a escrever panfletos político-satíricos que, de novo, o iriam conduzir à prisão. Por intervenção de um ministro Tory, acabaria por ser libertado e durante onze anos viria a ser agente secreto e jornalista político dos Tories. Deliciou-se durante toda a vida na representação de diversos papéis e disfarces, utilizando-os com grande efeito como espião, e escreveu mais de quinhentos livros, panfletos e artigos jornalísticos abrangendo tópicos como a política, crime, religião, geografia, matrimónio, psicologia e sobrenatural. Morreu na cidade de Londres em 1731, segundo se diz de «uma letargia».
