Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe, nascido em 1930, foi educado no seio de uma família cristã evangélica na grande vila de Ogidi, um dos primeiros centros de trabalho missionário anglicano em Igboland, no Leste da Nigéria. Depois de estudar Medicina e Literatura na Universidade de Ibadan, foi trabalhar para a Companhia de Radiodifusão Nigeriana, em Lagos. A sua carreira na rádio terminou de forma abrupta em 1966 ao abandonar o cargo de Director de Radiodifusão Externa durante a sublevação nacional e os massacres que conduziram à guerra do Biafra. Escapara por um triz ao confronto com soldados armados que aparentemente acreditavam que o seu romance Um Homem Popular o implicava no primeiro golpe militar na Nigéria.
A carreira de Achebe como académico universitário começou em 1967 ao ser nomeado Senior Research Fellow da Universidade da Nigéria. Tornou-se Professor Emérito em 1985. Entre as universidades onde leccionou contam-se a Universidade do Massachussetts e a Universidade do Connecticut. Achebe tem recebido inúmeras distinções de diferentes partes do mundo, incluindo mais de vinte doutoramentos honorários de universidades na Grã-Bretanha, nos Estados Unidos da América, no Canadá e na Nigéria. Em 1987 recebeu o mais importante galardão nigeriano que premeia o trabalho intelectual, o Prémio de Mérito Nacional Nigeriano.
Achebe é autor de muitos romances, contos, ensaios e livros infantis. Quando Tudo se Desmorona, o seu primeiro romance, foi publicado em 1958. Já vendeu mais de oito milhões de cópias e foi traduzido para pelo menos 45 línguas. Seguiu-se-lhe No Longer At Ease (1960), A Flecha de Deus (1964), que arrecadou o primeiro New Statesman Jock Campbell Prize, e Um Homem Popular (1966). Anthills of the Savannah foi seleccionado para o Booker McConnell Prize em 1987. Beware Soul Brother, um livro de poesia, recebeu o Commonwealth Poetry Prize em 1972.
Chinua Achebe vive nos Estados Unidos e ensina no Bard College. É casado e tem quatro filhos.
