Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The writer of the following pages, containing the Genealogy of the Mather family, has endeavored to make it as complete as possible, and with that view has devoted much time and labor, in searching the ancient family records, and in carrying on a protracted correspondence with the different branches of the family located in various parts of the country. He believes it to be the most particular and full account of the family that has been published, and he wishes to embrace this opportunity to tender his thanks to those individuals who have felt sufficient interest in this work to give the author the benefit of their advice and knowledge. He is indebted to Mrs. Byles of Boston, for the names of the Father and Grandfather of the Rev. Richard Mather, which carries the account back to near the year 1500 - to Capt. Andrew Mather of New-London, for the Lyme branch from Richard of the second generation, son of Timothy of Dorchester, to the seventh generation - and to Samuel Mather, Esq., of Middletown, for copies of the same, including those of the eighth generation. He has also been furnished with that part of the Lyme branch who descended from the Rev. Moses Mather of Darien, Ct., by his grand-son Joseph Mather, Esq., now a resident of Darien.
