SOBRE O AUTOR

Olga Lengyel

Olga Lengyel nasceu na Transilvânia, no império austro-húngaro, a 19 de outubro de 1908 e faleceu em Nova Iorque, a 15 de abril de 2001. Enfermeira sobrevivente do Holocausto, foi testemunha no julgamento de Bergen-Belsen e o seu depoimento contra o doutor Joseph Mengele foi avassalador.
Foi casada com o médico Miklos Lengyel, com quem trabalhava no Hospital de Cluj-Napoca antes de serem deportados para Auschwitz, em 1944. Quando chegaram ao campo, os seus pais e filhos morreram e o marido faleceu pouco antes da libertação.
Olga foi a única sobrevivente da sua família e descreveu as suas experiências no livro Os Fornos de Hitler.
A sua vida posterior ao Holocausto foi dedicada a manter viva a memória dos homens, mulheres e crianças que morreram em Auschwitz. O livro foi publicado dois anos depois de a Segunda Guerra Mundial terminar.
Albert Einstein ficou tão tocado pela sua história que lhe escreveu uma carta, a agradecer o seu «livro muito honesto e muito bem escrito».
