Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. It will be taken for granted, it is hoped, that this account of British expansion is not intended as an exhaustive study, but as an introduction to a part of modern history that has received altogether too little emphasis in the past in Ameri can schools and colleges. In accordance with this purpose, bibliographies have been appended to the chapters. They refer, it is believed, to the best selection of available books for further reading, although they do not pretend to include all the important works on British imperial growth.
