T. E. Lawrence

Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), vulgarmente conhecido como Lawrence da Arábia, foi um homem de mil talentos. Arqueólogo, historiador, escritor, militar, espião, tradutor, homem de cultura e diplomata, Lawrence teve uma infância e uma juventude atribuladas. O pai, um pequeno nobre, abandonou a mulher para viver com uma escocesa. A família, que adotou o apelido Lawrence, pouco tempo parava num local, tendo vivido em vários pontos do Reino Unido e também de França. O jovem Lawrence estudou Arqueologia em Oxford e, a partir de 1910, trabalhou para o Museu Britânico como arqueólogo na zona situada entre a Turquia e a Síria. Como oficial do Exército, foi destacado para a região que tão bem conhecia, ajudando na revolta árabe contra os turcos otomanos. As suas ações mereceram a prestigiada Victoria Cross e a ordenação como cavaleiro, ambas recusadas por Lawrence. Através de várias reportagens sobre o seu papel na guerra foi universalmente reconhecido no Império Britânico como um herói. Em 1922, Lawrence retirou-se da vida pública, alistando-se na força aérea com breves passagens pelo exército. Homem de elevada cultura, correspondeu-se com a intelligentsia britânica, e não só, da sua época. Morreu em 1935, num acidente de motorizada. A sua lenda foi imortalizada no grande ecrã em Lawrence da Arábia, realizado por David Lean e com Peter O’ Toole no papel de protagonista. Mas além do filme, considerado um dos melhores épicos de todos os tempos, Lawrence tem múltiplas alusões nos livros de história e miríades de referências culturais.
