Henryk Sienkiewicz

PRÉMIO NOBEL DA LITERATURA 1905

Romancista polaco, nascido a 5 de maio de 1846 e falecido a 15 de novembro de 1916, na Suíça, foi galardoado com o Prémio Nobel da Literatura em 1905. Estudou Direito, Medicina e mais tarde História e Literatura na Universidade da Polónia, mas não chegou a formar-se. Exerceu a profissão de jornalista e, ao mesmo tempo escreveu novelas e contos. Foi editor do jornal Niwa e um dos fundadores da Fundação Mianowski e da Fundação Literária, de que foi presidente.
Viajou por vários países, incluindo a Itália, de onde tirou inspiração para escrever o célebre romance Quo Vadis? (1895), que retrata os primeiros tempos do Cristianismo. A história foi várias vezes adaptada ao cinema, destacando-se a realização de D'Annunzio, em 1924, e a de Mervyn Le Ray, em 1951, com a participação de Robert Taylor e Deborah Kerr. É também autor de uma trilogia de contos Ogniem i mieczem (1884) e da novela Krzyzacy (1900), entre outras obras.
No dealbar da Primeira Guerra Mundial foi para a Suíça e fez parte do Comité Suíço de Ajuda às Vítimas de Guerra na Polónia. Após a sua morte, o seu corpo foi trasladado para a Polónia apenas oito anos depois e encontra-se sepultado na Catedral de S. João em Varsóvia.
