Natural da Nova Zelândia, Ngaio Marsh (18951982) é considerada uma das Rainhas do Crime, a par de Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers e Margery Allingham. Ao longo de um período de cinquenta anos (1932-1982), escreveu trinta e dois romances policiais, que alcançaram a aclamação internacional. Devotada à pintura e ao teatro, incluiu-os frequentemente nos seus enredos.
