Holodomor In Global Perspective - How The Famine In Ukraine Shaped The World

 Between 1932-1933, millions of people died by forced starvation in Ukraine. The famine, now known as the Holodomor, became one of the most deplorable acts to take place in the history of the Soviet Union and in the longer twentieth century. The Holodomor occupies an important space in both Ukrainian and Soviet history, but less is understood about the famine's role in global history. Much has been written about the intent of the famine, its genocidal particulars, and the effects of the famine within the borders of Ukraine, but a significantly smaller amount of work has examined how the Holodomor affected, and was affected by, global economics, politics, and international relations during the 1930s. The famine was covered in hundreds of press accounts across the world, debated and discussed by governments and world leaders, and became a crisis that caught the attention of foreign observers on nearly every continent. This volume addresses, for the first time, the history of the Holodomor in global perspective. The chapters within this volume present perspectives on the famine, from a multidisciplinary approach, that enable us to reckon with the global implications of mass starvation that took place in Ukraine during 1932-1933 and understand them on a scale that transcends the borders of Ukraine and the Soviet Union. This book is the result of the germination of ideas that contributors first presented as unpublished papers at a conference, The Holodomor in Global Perspective, that was held at the University of Cambridge in 2022.  Political revisionism is a world-wide and historical trend often defining the nature of international relations of a certain historical period. But today, it has become more important than ever before. It revisits, discusses, and uncovers the novel meaning of many basic concepts used in theorizing about international relations as we know them. Some familiar concepts are merely getting outdated, others have proven to be wrong, while still others need to be revised to understand modern reality properly. The book draws lessons from the author s experience of practical diplomacy during 30 years as a senior Ukrainian diplomat with assignments in Tel Aviv, Washington, D.C., Ankara, and Tokyo.

 This book provides a systematic overview of hostile rhetoric on state-controlled Russian TV and shows how it laid the foundation for the Russian public’s widespread acceptance of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. It reveals the strategies behind the Kremlin-directed television coverage of the Euromaidan, Russia’s occupation of Crimea, and the first five months of the war in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine and demonstrates that, already in 2013-14, the hostile portrayal, dehumanization, and demonization of Ukraine was omnipresent on Russian TV. After a nuanced discussion of the concept of the enemy, the author compares the construction of enemies by the Russian state’s major international and internal broadcasters - RT (Russia Today) and Channel One. The findings show that both channels purposefully elicited fear and hatred towards Ukraine and Western countries in their audiences. Notably, Channel One—lesser known within the Western pundits community—was more extreme and radical in its coverage than the globally known RT channel. To provide a broader context, Shestopalova also draws parallels between Russian state-controlled communication on Ukraine and Russia’s wars of the two previous decades, namely those in Chechnya and Georgia.
