The Lebanese capital stands for Arab cosmopolitanism and cultural effervescence but also for its tragedies of destruction. This book examines the historical formation of Beirut as a multiply contested Mediterranean city. Fin de Siecle Beirut is a landmark contribution to the growing literature in Ottoman studies, in Arab cultural history and on Mediterranean cities. Combining urban theory, particularly Henri Lefebvre's work on cities and capitalism, with postcolonial methodology, the central thesis of this book is that modern Beirut is the outcome of persistent social and intellectual struggles over the production of space. The city of Beirut was at once the product, the object, and the project of imperial and urban politics of difference: overlapping European, Ottoman, and municipal civilising missions competed in the political fields of administration, infrastructure, urban planning, public health, education, public morality, journalism, and architecture. Jens Hanssen offers a comprehensive, original account of the emergence of modern Beirut out of an economic shift away from Acre in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. He argues that the Ottoman government's decision to heed calls for the creation of a new province around Beirut and grant it provincial capital status in 1888 paved the way for fundamental urban and regional reconfigurations long before colonial policies during the French Mandate period. This new Ottoman province came to constitute the territorial embodiment of regional self-determination for Arab nationalists in Beirut until the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Drawing on published and unpublished Ottoman government documents, Arabic sources, and European archival material, Hanssen's book traces the urban experience of modernity in the Ottoman Empire. The transformation of everyday life in late nineteenth-century Beirut and the concomitant policies of urban management is vividly set against the devastating civil war in Mount Lebanon and Damascus in 1860.

 During the 1950s and first half of the 1960s the Indonesian Communist Party grew from a few thousand members to become the third largest communist party in the world, before it was annihilated in a violent purge in 1965-6 that saw perhaps half a million alleged communists killed. Whilst a growing body of scholarship has analysed the anti-communist violence of 1965-6, much less has been written about the Party's experience and significance in the preceding decade and a half. Communism, Cold War, and Revolution: The Indonesian Communist Party in West Java, 1949-1966 is the first major study of the Party during that period to be written since the end of the Cold War. The book examines the Party's development at the intersection of world communism, a global Cold War and Indonesia's revolution. It shows that the Party represented both a revolutionary organisation and a vibrant movement, which was both linked to international networks and deeply intertwined with Indonesia's social fabric. In this book, Matthew Woolgar introduces the term 'archipelagic communism' to encapsulate the ability of the Party to achieve impressive growth amid a growing pluralism in global communism and a context of extreme local cultural and social diversity. Woolgar takes the case study of West Java - a populous and diverse province, which had a substantial communist presence - as an entry point for examining these developments. The study draws on a wide array of sources, ranging from interviews and government documents to newly available Party archives, to recreate Party life in unprecedented depth. The study traces the dialogue that communist leaders engaged in with foreign comrades but also argues that key to the Party's growth were activist energies at the grassroots and the Party's efforts to navigate social, cultural, and ethnic cleavages within Indonesian society. It shows how the Party became entangled with trade unionism, land conflicts, struggles for women's rights, youth activism, and cultural activities. It also delineates how conservative elites, backed by Western governments, used counter-revolutionary violence to destroy the Communist Party and institute a wide-ranging reshaping of Indonesian society: removing labour rights, reversing land reforms, enforcing a patriarchal state ideology, and reinforcing markers of ethnic and religious difference.

 The European left seemed to be in rude health during the 1970s. Never had so many political parties committed to representing the working class been in power simultaneously across the continent. New forms of mobilisation led by female, immigrant, and young wage-earners seemed to reflect the growing strength of the workers' movement rather than its pending obsolescence. Parties and trade unions grew rapidly as a diverse new generation entered the ranks. Why did the left's forward march halt so abruptly? The Halted March of the European Left shows how the left's defeats after the mid-1970s were not the inevitable result of de-industrialisation or, more precisely, the transition to a globalised and post-Fordist world that abolished the working class as a great historical actor. Choices that were made during a concentrated but decisive moment contributed to the left's lost battles. The British, French, and Italian left managed the shift to a new era by marginalising those groups of workers who had invested it with hopes of social and political transformation. Communist, socialist, and social democratic parties helped disempower the new components of the working class in workplaces, in society, in the political system, and successfully disciplined their traditional working-class supporters. The left encountered a crisis of purpose and identity, a sense of both defeat and lost opportunities, and the dissolution of the idea of a community of fate amongst workers. This book provides a comparative analysis of the left's fragmenting relationship with the working class and a 'feel' for the culture of three leading industrial countries during a traumatic transition of late twentieth-century history. It concludes that decisions taken by the left during the 1970s contributed to the tragic inversion of the expected outcome of that hopeful decade.
