In George MacDonald's tale, "The Wise Woman: A Parable," two spoiled children, one of luxury and one of poverty, are stolen away by a magical "Wise Woman" to be taught discipline, responsibility, and humility. No matter how much she teaches them, however, the girls must decided for themselves what kind of person they want to be.
