This report deals with the seismic qualification of cast-in channels and shear connector devices between steel and concrete (Report No.4 of Task 6 of the Cascade Project). Nowadays connecting devices are widely used. Even if several guidelines and norms regard their application in the static case, there is a lack of reference standards and procedures as far as seismic and fatigue qualification is concerned. In this context, many experiments have demonstrated that the commonly used design formulae, mainly deriving from static tests analyses, are not on the safe side. The approach to the qualification of cast-in channels and shear connector devices is discussed here, taking into account the various points of view of the parties involved, and mainly: the Manufacturer, the Qualification Operator and the End User (Industry). A harmonized approach to qualification can provide benefits and reduce costs. Chapters 0 to 3.0 introduce the problem of qualification of cast-in channels and shear connector devices with general considerations on product qualification and the main related difficulties. Chapter 4.0 reports a list of common terms used in dynamic qualification of cast-in channels and shear connector devices. The seismic problem with particular focus on the consequences on connecting devices is analysed in Chapter 5.0, while the most widely used Standards are listed and analysed in Chapter 6.0. Various possible qualification approaches, i.e. experimental procedures and mixed procedures, are described in Chapter 7.0; critical aspects are highlighted and both comments and suggestions are provided. Indications of future needs for developments in dynamic qualification are given in Chapter 8.0. Finally, the main requirements of the various Standards are reported in Appendix A, while the reference documents used in this report are listed in Appendix B.
